The Man - his Goats - and the Coffee Cherries

The Man - his Goats - and the Coffee Cherries

The story of coffee is a beautiful and complex one with a long Journey that started a long long time ago in a distant place where today you would call it Ethiopia. Or the birth place of humanity as well, no coincidence  that this would be the place from where the "magic beans" would come as well.

The Myth.

This is a tale of a man, a goat herder, that in a sunny day while we was out with his animales alongside a mountain range he noticed that his goats were acting a bit stranger than usual, almost dancing like. This place was not his usual one to take his goats to pasture, this place was on a mountain hill with a lot of strange tree like plants that had a lot of cherries , red or yellow, and the branches almost touching the ground from the weight of those fruits. At first the man didn’t  notice that the goats were eating the fallen ones and he was thinking that his goats just might have more energy from the sunny weeks that they been having.

After a couple  weeks of these stranger things happening  the man noticed that his goats have been energized only when he would take then to pasture on the mountain hill close to Erta Ale, a active volcano in the northern  part of Ethiopia. Here there was an abundance of tree like plants full of cherries. the next day he looked closer and saw that his goats were feasting from the fallen fruits. He decided to pick some of the red cherries himself and take them home.

As he got home he started eating them as well and he observed that the fruit gave him happiness and more energy, he was revitalised after a full day of working the fields and taking his goats to greener pastures. As he started shearing the new discovered fruit a monk that remains nameless for the sake of mystery had a brilliant  idea of drying the fruit to preserve them and boiling them to make a tea like beverage when he was felling  tired.

The man's name is Kaldi and this is his tale, the myth, the legend of how the coffee was discovered in an age passed long ago.
